(The following Q&A is based on actual questions.)
DO YOU ACCEPT SCREENPLAY SUBMISSIONS? & WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THEM?
Yes we do. You must fill out a BGS_Project_Submission_2010.pdf form and send us a digital copy of your script for it to be considered a real submission. One of our development peeps will then read and provide coverage on your script for our execs. FYI, our development peeps, just like our execs, get it. It being the type of stories BG is interested in. So don’t worry. You are in good hands. However, we strongly encourage you to do your homework on how to technically write a screenplay and not to send out first drafts.
WHAT KINDS OF PROJECTS DO YOU MAKE? WHO IS YOUR AUDIENCE?
We are interested in transforming ideas or screenplays with potential for social impact into commercially successful motion pictures, TV shows, etc. To that end, we are focused on ambitious projects with the widest audience appeal.
I HAVE AN IMPORTANT STORY THAT I DESPERATELY NEED TO GET OFF MY CHEST, CAN YOU GIVE ME SOME CASH TO MAKE IT?
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN SHORT FORM AND TV?
Yes & Yes. Especially if it’s funny.
HOW MUCH DO YOU PAY PER IDEA?
Depends I guess. But as a rule of thumb we won’t option your screenplay outright unless it’s out of this world. Even if your screenplay is the bomb then most likely we would want to come on board as producers and work with you so that we can together get it to as many people out there as possible.
We are not a financing entity, however, as producers our job includes packaging the film for financing and commercial success. The real challenge is not knowing where the money is, rather, it is convincing investors that this is a worthwhile investment. Many investors have been burned in the last few years and are rightly hesitant to buy into the old indie financing scheme. For instance, we strongly advise against going after investors with the goal of convincing them to hold the “long” position a project--a typical equity deal through a PPM where investors and producers split the revenue after investment is paid pack and deferments are paid, etc. It is crucial to put together a compelling strategy that presents the possibility of high-level returns, while at the same time minimizing down-side risk. Not every project can be financed this way, but if we think it can, then we’d put together the financing and marketing plan and get it done.
